Temple of Nehalennia
Temple of Nehalennia submitted by Maatje : Replica of Roman Temple of Nehalennis, Colijnsplaat. (Vote or comment on this photo)
In the river of the Oosterschelde near the village of Colijnsplaat parts of a Roman temple were found, the remains were dated from 180 - 250 AD.
A replica of the temple was erected in Colijnsplaat. The original statues and pillars are preserved in the museum of Leiden, Rijksmuseum voor Oudheden. Some parts of the temple were found in Domburg, most were found in Colijnsplaat.
The goddess Nehalennia was mainly worshipped in Zeeland, one statue was found in what is now Cologne (Germany) at the Rhine.

Nehalennia is the goddes of the sea. Most likely she was the Mother goddess of the Celtic and/or German peoples of fertility. She was conscripted by the Roman empire as a goddess of sailing, trade and fertility. What is special about her is that she has a dog and she wears a short jacket.

The village was named Ganuenta and it was an important trading village for fish, garum, pottery and wine. It is situated in the delta of the Rhine, the Meuse and the Scheldt and it was a switch in trade to the inlands of the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and towards England and France.
