Silex's is an Interpretation Centre located in the heart of the vast neolithic flint mines of Spiennes, Belgium which date from around 4000 BC. The first mine was discovered in 1867 during major civil engineering works - subsequently, many more mines have been discovered, up to several hundreds. Some are about 10m deep, some give access to horizontal galleries

The centre opened to the public on 5th April 2015, to replace a previous, more modest museum. .

In 2000, UNESCO listed the whole site.

Silex's gives access to some of the most spectacular mines. Visits are limited to 3 groups of 12 persons per day. Arrangements should be made with the Tourist Office of the City of Mons.

Address: Rue du Point du jour, 7032 Spiennes
In practice : set your navigator to (50.42275, 3.97720) and drive the last 500 m (towards the SE).

My video on the Flint mine.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGOCwbuqMVU

This is a unique opportunity to visit a flint mine. And it is not a fake copy for tourist (such as Gava in Spain) but a real site where flint axes has been extracted during 4th and 3rd millenenium. Going down is an option, you have to book before (just call them) and you will spend a full hour with an archeologist (working 20 meters from the Silex's in real condition). You can be 12 person per visit. A great moment ! Manu
