In the 19th century, the "Bois Joly" was the property of Edouard-Joseph Joly (1812-1887), lawyer, banker, and also archaeologist in his spare time. He assembled a sizeable collection of artefacts from excavations in nearby tumuli – now preserved for the main part in the "Musée du Centenaire", Mons, and "Metropolitan Museum", New York.
In 1850-1860, he designed his park by incorporating monuments inspired by what was at that time believed to be "druidish", like this menhir, set up deep in the forest.
The Jolybos / Bois Joly is accessible on guided tours, on request.
