In the Terra Maris museum you can find a nice presentation of the tremendous changing of the landscapes in the delta area of the Schelde from 7000BC till 1750AD. In many places in the delta there is a layer of peat in the soil that was of great importance to residents. Floods created a salt layer on the peat. The peat could be used for heating and the salt for trade. Thus a salt industry arose in Zeeland.

The museum is limited to the period from the early Middle Ages to the present in terms of soil and flora and fauna. In Domburg, part of a Roman temple used to be visible at low tide (see Nehalennia Temple Colijnsplaat or in roman, Ganuenta.

On Walcheren there are also sites dating to Bronze and Iron Age.
