Tournai was founded by the Romans soon after their conquest of Gallia Belgica, mid-1st c. BC.
The roots of the Merovingian dynasty (5th to 8th c.) have been linked to the city of Tournai. The Musée archéologique displays artefacts found locally, ranging from the early Roman years to the Merovingian dynasty. The museum is housed in the well-preserved early 17th c. Mount of Piety, which adds to the interest of a visit.
Address : Rue des Carmes, 8 – Tournai.
