The menhir is laying flat near the top of the little knoll, an ancient volcano from the Oligocene period, there is a ravine of stinky bitumen at the bottom of the knoll, hence the name "la Poix”

Menhir du Puy de la Poix is a 2 metre broken granite menhir, situated on private ground just to the north of a big new roundabout junction between the D772 and D776 roads, just to the south of the Clermont Ferrand airport. It is said to have been 2.7 metres tall before it was broken as part of the airfield defenses construction during WW2.

It should be noted that in the distant past, this was a marshy area, and the granite has been brought here from at least 7 km away.
