On this basaltic plateau 1500 metres long, the Gallic troops beat the Roman troops steered by Julius Caesar. It will be the only battle lost during "the Gallic War".
On the top of the plateau, a commemorative monument has been raised in honour of the Gallic leader Vercingétorix.
Vercingétorix will be later beaten with the troops of Julius Caesar and will die in captivity.
