Ancient Village or Settlement in Balearic Isles (Mallorca / Majorca)
This is one of the saddest examples of the indolence of the authorities of Mallorca towards archaeological heritage. Es Rossells is, actually, a cluster of settlements with a lot of surface remains that has been inhabited from the bronze age to medieval times. In spite of that fact, the site had never received any attention until recently, when a group of independent archaeologists has started a study project at the place. Moreover, the site is in huge private property and it is not possible to visit it regularly (except for some visit days planned by the local authorities). And as if all these facts wasn't enough, the site is really hard to find.
Es Rossells I is a talaiotic and probably post-talaiotic settlement (iron age) surrounded by a massive stone wall that reaches 3 metres high and even 4 metres wide. the settlement plant is oval in shape and is 300 metres long. The wall has at least 3 entrances on the east, west and south, being the southern and western ones bigger and the eastern one, smaller. Also the wall varies in size and monumentality, being less monumental at the northern and western part, and more monumental at the southern and western parts. It is believed that the most monumental areas are facing other talaiotic settlements.
The inner part of the settlement is almost completely covered by a dense vegetation and almost completely buried with soil and modern structures, covering most of the inner facades of the perimeter wall. Only some stone walls and a single building are visible at the current ground level. Also, there is a mound of soil and stones at the northern part of the wall, attached to it, that might be a talaiot.
