Istanbul Amenhotep III Obelisk
Istanbul Amenhotep III Obelisk submitted by AlexHunger : Obelisk taken from Egypt during antiquity and now in Istanbul park near the Blue Mosque. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Obelisk of Amenhotep III taken from the karnak temple in Luxor Egypt and then placed by the Romans in the Spina of the Byzantine Circus where the chariot races ook place.

The rest of the circus was dimantled in order to built the Blue mosque.
The Obelisk was also shortened from the original 24 meters to only 20 in order to either hide some damage at the bottom or to ease transport.

Istanbul Amenhotep III Obelisk submitted by h_fenton : views of the Marble base below Istanbul Amenhotep III Obelisk, showing crowd scenes at the hippodrome. the obelisk stands on some metal feet (looks like bronze) on top of this block of marble. in the right photo you can see where some of the hieroglyphics have been truncated when the lower part of the obelisk was removed. 24 April 2008 (Vote or comment on this photo)
