Ancient Settlement in Manisa Province, Turkey

Former Capital of the Lydian Kingdom dating to before 7th Century BCE and famously ruled by King Croesus. Sardis is famous for having invented minted coinage.

The city became completely Hellenised after it's conquest by Alexander the Great and was later absorbed by the Roman Empire. Important works of art are now in the New York Metropolitan Museum. More than 1000 tombs have been discovered. Important buildings include the Temple of Artemis and the gymnasium complex.
