Bambata Cave
Bambata Cave submitted by h_fenton : Bambata cave, detail of rock painting showing a kite like spirit medium. site visited: 18 August 2003 (Vote or comment on this photo)
Bambata Cave, a rock shelter with rock paintings, on the edge of Matopos National Park, Zimbabwe (south of Bulawayo). Part of the cave has been excavated and has revealed occupation deposits that date back around 3000 years. Rock art of the walls depicts a variety of animals, people, grain storage bins?, and a strange spirit medium that seems to be everywhere.

There are some different styles of painting in this cave. Dating wise it is difficult to date paintings and there are varying theories as to how old different styles are - many are thought to be prehistoric. Some of the more recent scenes in Bambata cave possibly depict slavery and may only be 300 years old.

Cattle have at times been kept in this cave and to the height of the cattle all the paintings have been rubbed off the walls.
