Ephesus Temple of Artemis
Ephesus Temple of Artemis submitted by AlexHunger : Remains of temple of Artemis destroyed already in Antiquity. The site was completely cleared of stones around 400 CE and some columns were used in the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Temple in Turkey

Location of the former Temple of Artemis which was once one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
It was started in the 6th century BCE with subsidies from the legendary King Croesus of Lydia. It was eventually finished around 400 BCE, but burned down around 356 BCE, probably during a robbery of the temple funds although it was blamed on a local madman, Herostratus.
Alexander offered to rebuild it, but was politely turned down as "one God may not serve another."
Only one column remains. Others were taken to the British Museum, and other museums.

In this pose, with the two familiar animals, Artemis takes on some of the identity of the older goddesses Kybele, Kubaba, as well as the Earth Mother statue of CatalHöyük.
