The town started on the central höyük where the theatre and Turkish fortress now stand, on a peninsula which originally had four harbours, though most are now silted up, as Millawanda, part of the Arzawa vassal state of the Hittites in about the middle of the 2nd millennium BCE. Around 1400 BCE Mycenaeans grabbed this trading foothold between Ephesus and Dydima.
After the dark ages, following the Sea People incursions, it became a Greek city about 1000 BCE and became a major economic power and a coloniser of the Aegean and Black Sea. It was built on a grid like plan as devised by Hypodamus and the ancient philosophers Thales, Ananximander and Anaximenus lived here.
The Archaic Greek city was destroyed by the Persians around the 5th century BCE following an uprising. The rebuilt city boasted a theatre, a stadium, a Temple of Athena, a Temple of Serapis, a Temple of Asklepius and baths.
On the south west of the town, there is a mound, Kalabak Tepe, dating to the earliest Archaic time.
