Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Turkey

The Journal of Antiquities includes an entry for Mary’s House, Mount Koressos, Turkey. The foundations of this building were discovered in the late 19th century and originally dated to 6th to 7th centuries AD; later discoveries of charcoal gave a date of the 1st century AD. The Journal also outlines an intriguing story of how the house, believed to be the refuge of the Virgin Mary after she accompanied St John from Jerusalem to Ephesus, was discovered through the vision of a German Nun in the 18th century, followed by archaeology which later found the ruins.

To the west of Mary's House is a holy water fountain and a well, long being renowned for curing the sick, and a place of pilgrimage today. The Wikipedia entry for Mary's House and Well tells us that the well is used more as a wishing well today - see House of the Virgin Mary.

Mary's House and Mary's Well
Mary's House and Mary's Well submitted by PAB : 'This is where Mary would have sat to watch the sun set' - this was the phrase used by a guide to a friend who told me of her visit to Mary's House & Well some years before. Our friend wasn't particularly religious, but the place and description had made quite an impression on her, so we made sure we included it when planning a trip around Turkey. This photos was our own view of the sun ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

It was interesting to see this site on the Portal, as I hadn't thought of it as a place of Antiquity so hadn't posted photos of our own visit there in 2009.

It is however most certainly a Holy place, and a place of pilgrimage - both for Christian and Islamic faiths. We had not appreciated that Muslims hold Mary in such high regard and respect - as being the mother of a great prophet, aka Jesus.

We made a point of staying in the nearby town and hiring a car to be able to visit the chapel when it was quiet - it is on the list of places visited by cruise ships, so at times there will be a long line snaking through the house, which is now a chapel. Most visitors will therefore not be true 'pilgrims', and I suspect that many will not have a chance to get any real 'feel' for the house.

As with so many such places, it will be special for some, and empty for others. "For those who believe, no proof is necessary: for those who do not believe, no proof is sufficient."
