Hillfort in Greek Islands (Aegean etc)
Description
This ancient hillfort encircles the summit of a steep hill overlooking Ftelia beach to the northwest and the town of Ano Mera to the southeast.
The fort is of an oval concentric design with both an inner wall and outer wall(s). The inner wall varies in thickness from 5 - 10 feet, completely encircling a plateau at the top of the hill with an area of roughly 150 feet by 250 feet. This wall is in ruins, now never reaching its original height as it was originally constructed. Despite this, sections of it reach nearly 10 feet when viewed from the outside on the southern slope.
There are remnants of one or more outer walls encircling the slope, but these are heavily ruined, with few sections rising up more than a few feet.
Access
This site is accessed by navigating to Ghizi Castle (also spelled Gyzi or Gizi), a ruined 13th-century fortress located directly at the base of the hill to the southeast. From this location, Paleokastro is plainly visible at the top of the plateau.
While it isn't difficult to get to the base of the hill, (there is a paved road running right alongside it) actually entering the hillfort requires a short but steep hike up the hill. Be careful, as the path is narrow and the footing isn't sturdy.
Upon hiking up the hill, you can enter the fort through the original entryway, which is a half-moon shaped protrusion on the east side of the inner wall. Inside the fort itself, there isn't much remaining other than a deep stone-lined pit, a couple low walls, and a chapel from the modern era.
This site is very rarely visited and has beautiful views of the beach and surrounding countryside, making it a very serene visit. Make sure to bring sturdy shoes with good grip, and be prepared for high winds.
