Ancient Settlement in Northern Greece and Macedonia

Maroneia was founded by Chian colonists on the South West slopes of Ismaros, in the mid-7th century BCE and soon developed into a prosperous and densely inhabited city-state. According to legend, the mythical founder of the city was Maron, a priest of Apollo as described by Homer. Excavations of the site started in the late 1960's and unearthed the Hellenistic and Roman theatre, a probable 4th century BCE sanctuary of Dionysos, a large Hellenistic house with a mosaic floor, two probable Hellenistic public function complexes, and parts of the Classical 10 kilometre long fortification walls.
