Stone-cist graves in Estonia. The concentration of stone graves around the Kahala Lake is unique in Estonia - about 250 stone cist graves are preserved on its shores. They are all located in alvar areas with a thin humus layer, and most of them are oriented to the lake, i.e. they command, or have commanded a view on the lake.

The largest grave group of the region and also of the whole Estonia is located in Muuksi and known by the name of Hundikangrud (Wolf Mounds).

Stone cist graves are the most numerous as well as best investigated type of archaelogical monuments of the bronze and Pre-Roman Iron Age in Estonia. Such graves were built during the period 11'00-200 BC, some single graves may have been built until about the birth of Christ. But later burials have been sporadically buried in stone cist graves until the end of Prehistoric Period (the Northern Crusade).

In stone cist graves men were buried as well as women and children. Access by car to (59.4981, 245.5124) off road N.270, where a small car park is provided, and, more important, a detailed information board in Estonian and English.

There are numerous such sites in Estonia (see map). This one is pretty easy to find and reach.
