Ancient Temple in Northern Greece and Macedonia. The Sanctuary of the Great Gods in Samothrace was an important religious cult center. From prehistoric times the Great Mother was venerated and during antiquity she was associated with the fertility Goddess Demeter (Mother Earth).
Before the 7th century BCE there was a sacred rock where the rituals took place. From the 6th century BCE and down to the Hellenistic period the temple, the sanctum, a circular building, the tholos of Arsinoe 289-285 BCE (queen of Egypt), the altar, a long stoa and a theater was built. Other deities venerated were Hecate goddess of the dead, spirits and magic, with lunar and catacthonic qualities. Later she was identified as Aphrodite. Kadmylos the spouse of Great Mother was a fertility god symbolized by a phallic symbol. Kadmylos later becomes Hermes. And there is a pair of underworld deities identified to Hades and Persephone. The mystery cult was open to everyone Greeks or non-Greeks as opposed to the Eleusinian Mysteries. The initiates had to take a wow of silence. The historian Herodotus and Philip the father of Alexander the Great was initiated. The famous winged statue of Nike (Victory)was unearthed here by French archeologists and is now exhibited in the Louvre, Paris.
