Ancient city in Crete

The occupation in the area of Hersonissos dates back to Bronze Age - Minoan material was discovered in Hersonissos itself and on the nearby hill of Kastri. In Hellenistic period the city of Hersonissos was a port of Lyttos. It reached its heyday in the Roman period, which saw construction of an acqueduct and a theatre.

The threatre was partially destroyed in the second half of the 19th century, but excavations revealed most of its plan. The structure included a portico with curved ends and colonnade, as well as a paved orchestra and a cavea with retaining wall.
