The Portara gate (the Great Door) is on a tongue of land just beyond the harbour in Naxos (Chora) town. There has been a settlement here since the 3rd millennium BCE.
The Portara was the entrance to an unfinished Temple of Apollo. It points directly across the sea to the sacred island of Delos (Dilos) where the Greek god Apollo was born.
Palatia is also linked to tragic myth of Ariadne, princess of Crete. She was the daughter of King Minos.
