Cave in Bulgaria

A vagina shaped ritual cave in the mountain above the Borovitsa Chalet, some 14 miles from Kurdzali.

Natural cave originally 15 Meters deep then lengthened to 20 Meters deep.

At noon, the sun seeps into the cave through an opening in the ceiling and projects the representation of a phallus onto the floor which progressively grows longer, reaching out to the womb altar. In January and February, when the sun is at the lowest on the horizon, the phallus becomes long enough to reach the altar and symbolically fertilises the womb.

The site was apparently used for Bacchic rituals. Even now, once a year, young unmarried men and women gather in the local caves to take part in the sacrament of conception.

Nenkovo Rock Womb
Nenkovo Rock Womb submitted by Flickr : The Womb Cave on the inside The acoustics are unbelievable! The tunnel is perfectly orientated south-north and the entrance is from south. On the ceiling there is a specially made cleft, through which every day at 12 o'clock a sunray falls. It can be seen for a couple of minutes, gradually expanding and moving towards the altar. While expanding, the light obtains the shape of a phallus. In au... (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Ritual Places in Thracia, from Megaliths to Temples by Costas Maritsas
The goal of the paper is to present the transition from megaliths to temples as cultural phenomena.

The problem of sexual ritual and ritual places sacralization is considered and main causes of this process are defined. For this purpose varied material of Thracian culture is analyzed: megalithic art, ancient tragedy (Euripides and Bacchae), mythology (Dionysus, Satyrs, silenus), cave painting.

It is shown that sexual rituals have been transformed in series of the mysterious ceremonies made in temples. To these conclusions author has come having analyzed a number of Thracian culture objects, located in territories of Bulgaria and Turkey.

Rituals places in Thracia: from megaliths to temples”, XI. International Congress of Thracology, University of Istanbul, İstanbul, 8-12 November 2010, Turkey.

The Rock Womb Cave at Nenkovo - Video by Andy B on Wednesday, 29 October 2014
(User Info | Send a Message)
The Rock Womb at Nenkovo- This amazing structure was discovered in 2001 and it is situated some 24 km from Kardzhali. It is high in the mountain, in a wild, rocky area above the Borovitza hut. The temple is shaped like the opening to a vagina. It leads into a cave deep about 22 m. A human hand shaped it into a place of conception constantly washed by water seeping through the walls. At the deep far end of the cave, a carved altar symbolises the womb itself. At midday as the sun approaches its highest point in the sky, its light seeps into the cave through a special opening in the ceiling and projects a perfectly recognisable representation of a phallus onto the floor. As the sun progresses further, and the light slants across the interior of the cave, the phallus grows longer, reaching out to the womb altar. Only during some months of the year, when the sun is lowest on the horizon, the phallus becomes long enough to reach the altar and symbolically fecundate the womb.
