Cup and Ring marks / Rock Art in Latvia

Location and approach: Davini Great stone is a cup marked boulder, located in Bērzaine parish (pagasts) of Kocēni local municipality (novads), Northern Latvia. It can be found 50 m to SW from Straumes house and 200 m to NW from Daviņi farm in an open place on a eastern slope of Viteķe stream walley. Stone is easily approachable from nearby gravel road, trespassing meadow. Davini Great stone is a state protected monument.

Dimensions: 4,7 m long, 3,15 m wide, 1,6 m height, 10m3 volume.

Geology: stone not moved from it's original position, orientation of the axis - 130 degrees, material: Rapakivi granite.

Description: Davini stone as a first cup marked stone in Latvia was found in 1925 by historian Arturs Štāls, who counted 15 holes on it's surface. In second part of 20th century some other researchers visited stone and found additional cups - number increased to 19, 24 and finally in 2008 the expedition of Latvian Petroglyphs' Center discovered 32 holes in total. Most important discovery of this expedition was the fact that some cups on Davini Great stone are connected with gutters what is not typical characteristic for cup marked stones in the Baltic region.
Conuss shaped cup marks on Davini Great stone are of various size: diameter 3-15 cm, depth 1-7 cm. Larger ones are made very elaborately while smaller are almost unnoticable on the first view.
The stone is not archaeologically excavated, but researchers, based upon similar objects in Estonia, dates it with II-nd part of I millenia BC. The meaning and function of the cups is not clear while most archaeologists agree that those were made for the needs of some "cultic" practices, possibly ancestors or fertility regarded.

Folklore: There are several stories explaining origins of cup marks in the stone. One story tells about old maids who dug Viteķe stream and took their meals with the stone as a table - whichone landlord gave better meal, to that direction the river-bed was dug. Another story keep the stone as a table while eaters for this turn are swedish soldiers and their king (reminescence about swedish rule in Livonia in 17-th century): cups in accordance with this story were made by their bowls.
