Cylindroi submitted by Antonios : Colossal pillar at Kylindroi, Evoia (Vote or comment on this photo)
Colossal monolithic pillars at Kylindroi (cylinders) located on mount Karystos at 600 meters altitude on the island of Euboea. The site was an ancient quarry of Hellenistic, Greco-Roman and Byzantine period, with 8 pillars lying on the ground.

The biggest has a height of 11 meters and weighs over 45 tons. It was a great technological achievement to have the columns dragged all the way down to the sea-port of Karystos and have them loaded on a ship in a balanced way to be sailed away to Hellenic colonies as far as Libya (temple of Zeus, Kyrene), to Rome (temple of Antonios and Faustina, house of Julius Caesar, to Thessalonica for the Church of Saint Demetrius and to Constantinoupolis for the Hagia Sophia and Saint Apostles church.
