Kommos submitted by AlexHunger : Port of Kommos. Located on the south central coast of Crete, Kommos supported the Palace of Phaestos and Agia Triada. It would have been ideal to reach trading partners in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. There is a sandy beach and dunes in front of this port town, as sea levels appear to have changed dramatically in the last 3000 years. Excavations are on-going, so the site is not accessible, but th... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Village or Settlement in Crete. The site used to be a port for trading with Egypt and settlements in Libya and Tunisia. Sea levels fell since the Bronze Age, so it is not exactly at the water's edge anymore. It had good accesss to Phaestos. Due to excavations, it is only possible to go around the perimeter.

Kommos submitted by 43559959 : Kommos. Although the site is not open to the public it's still possible to get good views from behind the fence or nearby hills. Here a view of the Central Hillside area with mostly middle and late Minoan remains. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Kommos submitted by 43559959 : Kommos, viewed through the Greek Sanctuary towards the breakwater facing the Libyan Ocean. The water beeing a few meter lower during the Minoan times, the breakwater afforded Kommos with a not so bad harbour to conduct it's contacts with a large number of places in the Mediterranian, from Egypt to Sardinia.

Kommos submitted by 43559959 : Kommos, a most interesting minoann site on the south coast of Crete. Facing the Libyan sea, it has a most gorgeous location on an endless beach crowned by the Ida Mountain Range.

Kommos
Kommos submitted by kerrywoman : The site is huge and not fully excavated. I first visited in 2004, this photo was taken in 2007 and there have been visible improvements in the excavations over the past three years.
