This Roman fortress was built on over an existing Dacian settlement, possibly the capital of the Suci tribe. The word dava in the Dacian language means town. The Roman settlement was occupied between 270-450 A.D.

During the emperor Constantine a second bridge over the Danube (the first was built by emperor Trajan in 105 A.D.) measuring over 2km was constructed. Inside the fortress an even older settlement dating back to the Neolithic era was uncovered. Visitors can see the first Christian basilica north of Danube and south of the Carpathians. A unique feature in Europe is the Secret Well, an underground fountain used during sieges.
