Stone Head of Salaspils
Stone Head of Salaspils submitted by Alta-Falisa : Exhibited in the cloister of the cathedral of Rīga. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Sculptured Stone in Latvia.

It may have been sculpted between the 16th and the 18th centuries, when many pagan idol sculptures have been created in Latvia, then hidden away.
Found mid-19th century under a thick layer of lichen and moss by a farmer from Salaspils (ca. 30 km SE of Riga). He brought to Riga in 1851 or 1852 for the use of a mason who soon realized he wasn't in front of an ordinary boulder. The mason handed it over to the cathedral, where a collection of antiques was being assembled.
Its trace is lost long before the end of the 19th century : the stone, a pagan idol, had possibly been already buried by the religious authorities. Only a few photos remained.
The stone was re-discovered at the very end of a 1986-2000 campaign of excavations conducted in the cloister of the cathedral.
Now exhibited in Riga, cloister of Dom (cathedral).
Height 83 cm, depth 86 cm, width 66 cm.

Stone Head of Salaspils replica
Stone Head of Salaspils replica submitted by Alta-Falisa : A replica of the original Stone Head of Salaspils. It is set in a corner of Livu Laukums (Livu Square), Riga. "Face view" is probably an appropriate title. This replica may not be exactly identical to the original, but the intention was to present an idol of former times to a large audience. The photo of the replica should be deleted from this page.
The page dedicated to the replica (http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=35858) already figures it.
Note to distinguish them : the original is "indoor" (cloister of the cathedral), the replica is outdoor (on a square, under trees).

I think it's a great idea to have pictures of the original and the replica on the same page. I think the replica's page should have a picture of the original on it too.

I prefer the replica. Thank you for posting these great pictures btw.
