Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature in

Velnio Akmuo (Devil's Stone) is the tenth largest random stones in Lithuania.
It stands West of Švendubrė, South of the famous spa resort Druskininkai, the last village just before the border with Belarus and on the right bank of the River Nemunas (Niemen).

The place has a magic of its own : borders being borders, all the more so when it is about the border between Europe and Belarus (a mere two km further South), you easily get a feeling of "end of the world" -- but inhabitants of the village of Švendubrė would discretely smile, would you talk so candidly.

Photo : June 2015.

Declared national archaeological monument in 1972. In 2005, the whole site, along with the three wooden sculptures (2004) representing legendary characters, has been raised to the status of state-protected cultural heritage site.

Velnio akmuo
Velnio akmuo submitted by Alta-Falisa : Overall view of the site : my car after a U-turn to go back to Švendubrė ; the wood behind which flows the River Nemunas marking the border with Belarus ; an information board ; three totem-like sculpted trunks figuring traditional characters, a speciality of the region ; and, most important : "Velnio Akmuo", the Devil's Stone. Velnio akmuo
Velnio akmuo submitted by Alta-Falisa : An information board at the end of Švendubrė, at (53.98035, 23.93693). From here, follow and trust your navigator. If you are scared by potholes, better go on foot, as the road becomes a field road before reaching the "Akmuo" (stone). June 2015. (Vote or comment on this photo)
