Ancient Temple in Attica

Remains of Temple of Artemis, of which the stoa colonnade remains the best preserved. The site is essentially built around a sacred well. The temple was built on the side of the hill, but has now been replaced by a small church.

The site also has the ceremonial or actual tomb of Iphigeneia, daughter of Agamemnon, sacrificed by the Achaeans to Artemis in order to obtain propitious winds to Troy for their fleet, as described by Homer in the Iliad. The story is not completely implausible, as the Achaeaan fleet would have had to pass here on the way from Tyrinth, the main Mycenaean port.

Around the corner, there is a small museum with some statues.

Many buildings referred to in inscriptions from the time have not yet been found. For example the gymnasium, stables and amfiopoleio ( buildings where the "bears" or young girls who served in the temple lived) (Vote or comment on this photo)

Vravrona Temple of Artemis
Vravrona Temple of Artemis submitted by nifitsa : The Great Stoa. Most of the buildings uncovered so far are classical (420BCE), and built after the destruction of the Sanctuary by the Persians. Worship of Artemis in this area dates from the 9th century BCE and continued though to 300 BCE when the Sanctuary was abandoned for unknown reasons.

Vravrona Temple of Artemis
Vravrona Temple of Artemis submitted by nifitsa : The Sanctuary of Artemis at Vravona is much better maintained than in the past. There is now improved access with walkways which also help protect the site. The area and nearby hill were inhabited from the neolithic, and the settlement flourished right through to the Mycenaen when it was abandoned 1200BCE with the collapse of that civilisation.

Vravrona Temple of Artemis
Vravrona Temple of Artemis submitted by nifitsa : Stone Bridge. This provides access to the temple across the stream which flows from the spring. The end of the sacred way from Athens. You can still see the grooves from the wheels of carts, and hear frogs ribbiting and splashing in the stream.

Vravrona Temple of Artemis
Vravrona Temple of Artemis submitted by nifitsa : The sacred spring. This was used in rituals, and many votive offerings were found here, including wooden ones which rarely survive elsewhere. It is thought that many valuable offerings may have been buried here for protection after the Temple was destroyed by the Persians.

When we visited the site was closed, although the nearby museum was open. We were unsure it this was due to funding reductions that have affected many minor archaeological sites in Greece this year.
