Ancient Temple in Attica
Sanctury to the deified Attic king Amphiaraos who was also a seer and heeler. King Amphiaraos was mentioned in the Oedipus cycle plays attempting being involved in Oedipus' sons attempt to regain their Theban throne after the blinding of the tragic Hero.
The settlement of Oropos, however, existed in the neolithic and was first mentioned by Homer in the Iliad as Graia. This small town seems to have become uninhabited around the 2nd century CE
The site is wedged into a NW/SE oriented valley. There was a medium sized 4th century BCE Doric temple, which was unfortunately largely washed away by the local Charadra stream in late antiquitity. The remains of the bath, heater and very long 110 Meter Stoa are more visible. There are pedestal for Roman era statues. The setlement is visible across the seam bed, but this is difficult to cross on account of prickly vegetation.
There is suposed to be a Mycenean tomb in the immediate vicinity.
129 Meters altitude.
