Acropolis
Acropolis submitted by Alun : The Acropolis at Athens is the big rock which all the temples sit on. The temple you can see peeking over the fortifications is the Parthenon. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Temple in Greece.
The site of the Acropolis has been occupied since the Neolithic. Small caves on the south side between the Theatre of Dyonisus and the Odeon of Agrippa were once in inhabited and the top of the Acropolis has one of the only two Attica Neolithic Graves, though this is normally not shown to tourists.

There were earlier Archaic temples on the acropolis, but these were burned down by the Persian invaders. Some vestiges are displayed n the Acropolis museum. Under Pericles, Athens launched a major reconstruction program leading to the building of the Parthenon and a general flowering of Athenian culture.
