There were earlier Archaic temples on the acropolis, but these were burned down by the Persian invaders. Some vestiges are displayed n the Acropolis museum. Under Pericles, Athens launched a major reconstruction program leading to the building of the Parthenon and a general flowering of Athenian culture.
