Three, possibly four, rock cut tombs on the island of Skopelos, looking across to Alonissos. Variously described as Roman or Neolithic, they are similar to rock cut tombs on the mainland.

Fantastic site. Three finished tombs and one just carved to a very shallow level. Each of the three v approx 2m x 1m x 1m and with a 'pillow' rise at one end. A shallow rim around the top would keep out rainwater and matches a similar carved edge below the three huge capstones. The capstones are themselves roughly carved, the central one being a more natural, less carved, shape. Too rough for Roman. No crosses or fish for carvings for Christian. Position says prehistoric but I've never seen anything excavated to such a scale. Magical. I hope I can find a proper academic assessment. kr

I'm hoping to go to Skopelos again at the end of August: local Greek guidebooks are not noted for their in-depth views on this site, so I will ask some local people, I think, to see if I can find out some more: however, if anyone reading this gets the opportunity to visit this site, do - it's breathtaking in its' location and ambience.
