Prehistoric site in Romania

Three tablets dating back as far as 5500 BC have been found in 1961 alongside a skeleton near Tartaria, Alba-Iulia county. The tablets contain what is now known as the 1st written message in the history of mankind. This does not necessarily imply a written language as the tablets may have been used in shamanic rituals. One tablet is round and the others rectangular in shape with a size not exceeding few centimeters. Two of them have signs that are similar with other symbols in other language systems and one contains pictographs (animals, flora).

Exact dating of the tablets is nearly impossible as they have been exposed to high temperatures to preserve the unburnt clay. Dating was possible by analyzing the skeleton found alongside. Similar tablets have been found in Karanovo, Bulgaria but those have been dated in the III millennium BC.

The original tablets are located in the History Museum of Transylvania, Cluj. A large monolith marks the area where they have been found. It contains replicas of the tablets. The monolith is located on DN7 road between Orastie and Sebes.
