Cairn in Attica/Central Greece

Large Mycenaean Tholos. Though the roof has fallen in, the marble lintel is still above the door and there is an inner chamber. Further info by Antonios: Visitors can park right outside the vaulted tomb. Orchomenos was a prosperous and wealthy Mycenaean center. The site has been occupied since Neolithic times. The tomb is also called "Treasury of Minyas" from the legendary king Minyas who was believed to keep his treasures here. The prosperity of Orchomenos is due to the titanic geo-technical work of draining lake Kopais. Before the draining, the lake became a mosquito infested swamp during summers. Around 2550 BCE an area of 200 square miles was drained with 3 major canals and many underground drain tunnels. Then it became thriving agricultural center. After the explosion of Thera in 1630 BCE, the following earthquakes destroyed the Minian works. The hydraulic works were not maintained anymore and the silt covered everything. Kopais became a lake again. The next drainage was done in 1886 by a joint British- French company after many difficulties. The royal tomb was robbed in ancient times and the dome was pilfered for building materials in modern times. The site has archaeological findings from Neolithic up to the Roman period. Leake surveyed the site and Schliemann excavated it. Right next to the tomb there is an ancient theatre and up on Mount Acontion a Cyclopean and a Hellenistic fortification
