Ancient Temple in Attica/Central Greece
The greatest seer-healer and the first psychiatrist in ancient Hellas was the legendary Melampous, the son of Amythaon and Idomene. Melampous lived around 1400 BCE and acted mainly in Argolid. at Aigosthena (West Attica) resides one of his psychotherapeutic oracular sanctuary. There Melampous or one of his descendants cured the king of Megara, Alkathos (brother of Atreas) from melancholy. He gave Alkatho milk from goats that ate hellebore. In the region grows hellebore and in antiquity was named “Melampous grass”.The shrine of Melampous was founded inside the Pelasgian fortification that was built with polygonal megaliths. Later Athenians built the imposing fortress of Aigosthena with the classical rectangle layout. The shrine of Melampous (Melampodeion) was in use for 1500 years, until the Roman period. The early Christians razed the temple to the ground and a Christian basilica was built from the use of ancient material from Melampodeion. After the destruction of the basilica, the current small church of Saint Anna was built. Many ancient inscriptions were incorporated in the small church, one of them reads “Melampodora Achelonos “. Melampous also cured the daughters of king Proitos suffering from madness and leprosy. He gave them hellebore and bathed them at Anegrides Nymphs hot springs,(present day Kaiafa Springs).
