One of the largest hillforts in northern Poland is located on Góra Zamkowa („Castle Mountain”) near Szurpiły, between Szurpiły lake and Jegłówek lake. It was one of the main strongholds of the Yotvingians in early medieval period. The first settlement was founded in Bronze Age between 1300 and 1000 BC, while the first fortified hillfort of the Yotvingians was constructed in 5th – 6th century AD. There is evidence, that in 9th century the hillfort became a sacred ceremonial place. It was destroyed in 13th century by Teutonic knights.
Ramparts of the hillfort are in perfect condition, there are also races of minor strongholds protecting the hillfort from all sides – one of them was located on Góra Kościelna (“Church Hill”), however it is possible, that the latter was a cult place.
