Ancient Village or Settlement in Northern Greece and Macedonia

Ancient Pydna was founded in 7th century BCE by the Greeks, however in 5th century BCE it became part of Macedonia. It returned under the control of Macedonia in 410 BCE and once again during ruling of Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great. The city is mostly known from the battle which took place here in 168 BC,E in which Roman troops under Lucius Aemilus Paulus totally destroyed Macedonian army. This battle was decisive for the future of ancient Macedonia which was shared fby 4 provinces dependent on Rome, and later turned directly into Roman province.

The preserved ruins of Pydna come mostly from the Byzantian period, including remains of a castle and two basilicas from 4th - 6th century CE, however also much earlier remains were unearthed, such as Iron Age burial ground. Pydna was finally abandoned in 15th century CE due to pirate raids.
