Cave in Romania
The Bears’ Cave in Chişcău, Bihor County, Romania was discovered by accident in 1975. Following local mining exploitation's in the area, the opening towards the cavern was dynamited. Local miner Traian Curta was the first to explore the cave, managing to go through the gallery until the Great Hall of the cave. After 5 years of explorations the Bears’ Cave was finally opened for visitors in 1980. Consisting of 4 main galleries, but only 3 are open to the public the remaining gallery is accessible through a 30 meter pit and is opened only for professional speleologists.
In the 3 galleries accessible to the public, visitors can discover the remains of the cave trough a large amount of bear fossils, which have also given the name of the cave. The cave is also rich in natural formations, such as stalactites and stalagmites.
Visiting the Cave: The Bears’ Cave is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 5:00 p.m. On Mondays the cave is closed. The entry in the cave is done with a group of minimum 3 people, with a guide who will give you more details about the history of the cave. The tour lasts about 45 minutes.
Access: By car visitors can approach the site via the E79 national road till Sudrigiu, here you have to follow 763 national road until you reach Chiscau. Check map here
