Grodzisko Trzcinica
Grodzisko Trzcinica submitted by SolarMegalith : Ditch and rampart with reconstructed Early Medieval entrance and bridge to the main ward (photo taken on August 2019). (Vote or comment on this photo)
Hillfort in Podkarpackie. The hillfort in Trzcinica is called "Carpathian Troy", as history of its occupation starts in Early Bronze Age and ends in Early Medieval period. The site is located on a promontory overlooking Ropa river, currently it is an archaeological park with reconstructed elements of fortifications and huts from different phases of the hillfort's occupation.

The first fortified settlement was built here by people of Pleszów group of Mierzanowice culture around 2100 BC, it consisted of a single ward covering 0.5-0.6ha. Around 1650 BC people of Otomani-Füzesabony culture arrived here from the south and were peacefully accepted as demonstrated by archaeological evidence. The hillfort was remodeled and reinforced by addition of first outer ward. Some 90.000 artefacts of Otomani-Füzesabony culture were found in Trzcinica, including clay animal figurines and vessels with bump decoration. The settlement survived until about 1350-1300 BC.

In late 8th century BC the promontory was reoccupied by Slavic people who built a new hillfort in site of an abandoned one. This large defensive structure included the main ward (built in the site of the hillfort of Pleszów group and Otomani-Füzesabony culture) and three outer wards enclosed with ramparts. Later the hillfort was included in a defensive system of the early Polish state. A particularly interesting discovery from that period is a hoard consisting of some 500 artefacts, found in 1995 near the northern rampart of the main ward. The hillfort was burned down in the 30s of 11th century, which brought a definitive end to occupation of this site.
