Legendary stone in Lithuania

Seemingly, the stone was buried when it was originally noticed. It was later excavated. The stone covers a source regarded as miraculous. Wooden sculpture is a traditional art in Lithuania, generally representing legendary or religious characters.

Note about the alternative names :
- Aukuro akmeniu means "Altar Stone" is is often used for such stones having drawn the attention for many centuries. For our purposes, Akmeniu is synonym to the more frequently used Akmuo, stone.
- Senosios Įpilties akmuo means "Stone of Old Įpiltis", the name of the nearby village, and is now the preferred name.

Signposted along road 208 at the T-junction at (56.1216, 21.2628). The road is asphalted for about 600 m, the last 400 m on a good earth road. One could drive nearly up to the stone, but it is always better to approach such monuments on foot.

As a matter of interest, you are near the border with Latvia, whose Western half (roughly 400 km) has not budged since the 13th century, making it the oldest border between European States, even older than the border between Portugal and Spain.
