Ancient Village or Settlement in Serbia

Viminacium: best known in History for being the base camp of Trajan during the Dacian Wars.

The site was identified at the end of the 19th c. Late 20th c. excavations, prompted by the construction of the power plan nearby, lead to the discoveries of a major town built on the northern border of the Empire marked by the River Danube.
A large number of tombs (two, decorated with frescoes, are part of the tour scheduled every full hour), the remains of bath (completely excavated and part of the tour), the traces of a theater (reconstructed in wood). Further excavations are under progress near the Roman Baths, at the moment (visited in 2018)

The coordinates (44.7331, 21.2296) correspond to the entrance of the car park, ticket office, souvenirs shop, cafeteria.

The site is for now split in three parts ; you'll need your car to follow the guide from one to the next. April 2018.

Viminacium submitted by Alta-Falisa : A visit of Vaminacium wouldn't be complete without the mammoth skeleton. No worry, the guided tour will lead you to it, at the end of the visit. The poor best died in a marsh, and was found during earth-moving works ; in the process, only the skull has been dented. April 2018. (Vote or comment on this photo)
