The Greek-Roman-Byzantine town of Nikopolis was built in 31 BCE by Octavius (Augustus) because of his victory in the sea battle of Actio against Cleopatra and Marcus Antonius. The surrounded villages like Cassope were abandoned to get inhabitants for this new Greek-Roman town. In its golden age it as 320.000 inhabitants. Later the Byzantines took over the town. It was abandoned in the 12th century.
