Ancient Settlement in Libya

Greek colonists from Cyrene founded Euesperides in the 7th Century BCE. The Ptolemies, who took over Libya and Egypt after the reign of Alexander the great, renamed it Berenice, after one of their queens after a short period of abandonment. Later it became a Roman town. It was largely a vilage after the Arab invasion of 645 CE, but grew into Libya second largest city, Benghazi, after the 12th century.

The only ancient ruins are near the old italian lighthouse and a litle north east.
