Prehistoric Greeting submitted by ladrin : An interesting stone monument in Štrbské pleso mountain resort. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Stone monument in Slovakia

Impressive stone setting in the park of Štrbské pleso high-mountain resort. Object was discovered quite recently in 2021 by Mr Krajnak, identified as a prehistoric cultic and burial place and respectfully restored.

Stone monument of the size 7x14m is partly creation of the nature where man put the finishing touche. Large gap in the middle of broken erratic boulder could serve as a burial chamber. The object had circular enclosure made of stones.

Man made engravings can also be identified on the stones. Most recognizable are small holes aligned in line pattern on a surface of left boulder. Animal carvings which can be allegedly observed in good light I can't confirm.

It's a honest to say that deep archeological survey haven't been done yet. Only restauration and proper cleaning though with participation of some experts. Therefore it is also possible that the site is just remnant of an ancient quarry activity. However this does not correspond with stone wall much.

Anyway.. unusual stone object has great atmosphere being surrounded by Tatran high peaks. Literally. And is definitely worth a visit!

In regards of the alleged rock art: has there been any attempt to document these by methods like frottage or laser scan?

Hi Martin, I was VERY surprised to find this site during my hiking trip in Slovakia Tatry. Totally by chance. I started to find more on a web but not much valuable can be found by now. But take into account that the place is pretty recent.. 2021. As I could find, the man who promoted discovery/recovery was an amateur.
So I succeeded to contact by phone some people from Nitra town Archeological institute and get contact to one true expert/archeologist who know the place. He confirmed to my that only cleaning and restoration works has been carried out there under some sort of supervison of experts. Not more. So no such sophisticated methods you mentioned.
That man was almost sure that there were some quarry activity. Anyway how much it affected the site and whether it was the main point or much later subsequent works is totally uncelar.
