The temple is on top of Puy de Dôme. There is a little train going to the top or else it is a long walk.

Le temple de Mercure du puy de Dôme est un temple gallo-romain construit au IIe siècle au sommet du puy de Dôme, en remplacement d'un temple datant du Ier siècle. Des campagnes de fouilles en 1875 puis au début du XXe siècle en ont révélé les ruines.

Au cours du Ier siècle, la cité d'Augustonemetum (actuelle Clermont-Ferrand) des Arvernes décide de se doter d'un temple dédié à Mercure. Au siècle suivant, ce temple en arkose, devenu sans doute trop petit pour accueillir les nombreux pèlerins qui s'y rendaient, fut remplacé par un temple plus grand et plus majestueux en trachyte.
