Col de Panissars
Col de Panissars submitted by FXF : The link between the Roman roads with ruins of the medieval abby. Some Roman stones were used in the building. (Vote or comment on this photo)
In antiquity this used to be the most important pass across the Pyrenees. Already in neolithic time there probably was long-distance trade along what is now usually called "via Heraklea" (the road of Herakles), linking the Italian and the Iberian peninsulas. Although other theories have been advanced, this may still be the most likely spot where Hannibal crossed the Pyrenees with his elephants in 218 BCE.

During Roman times the road system of the "via Domitia" and "via Augusta" crossed here. At that time the pass was known as "summum Pyrenaeum". Tracks from the carts incised into the rocks are still visible. Pompey (the Great) erected a monument here to commemorate his victories in Spain. The pass was guarded by fortifications at "Clausurae" (=Les Cluses) which are still quite impressive.

In the Middle Ages an abbey was built across the actual road. The road crosses now further east at Le Perthus.

The site is freely accessible from Le Perthus. Some objects found and explanations are exhibited in the near-by Fort de Bellegarde.

Beautiful views into Spain and France!
