Mourrel Ferrat oppidum
Mourrel Ferrat oppidum submitted by richardfrance : This section of the south wall is in good condition - elsewhere within the enclosure little but rows of stones at ground-level show where buildings stood. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This Iron Age oppidum occupies an acre atop a modest wooded hill [130 Meters] and commands a view over the Aude river at the foot of its steep scarp, and across the valley to Alaric mountain.

Drive east past Homps along 'La Minervoise' [D610/D11] and cross the Canal du Midi. Take the first lane R leading to the Chateau Bassanel and park. Follow the farm track around the back and up an easy path through the pines.

Mourrel Ferrat oppidum
Mourrel Ferrat oppidum submitted by richardfrance : Site in Languedoc: Aude (11): There are two tower-bases on the northern limits - this is all that remains of the north eastern bastion. The stone opening is 50 cm. wide. Close to this archaeologists found an incineration grave containing an iron knife and a Massalian-type amphora [Greek colony of proto-Marseille] - permitting speculation that the oppidum contains a necropolis.
