La « vie inestimable » de Gargantua, selon Rabelais, ne fait que reprendre un ancien fond qui transparaît dans d’innombrables traditions populaires, sur tout l’ancien terroir français. Derrière le géant truculent et glouton se cache une très ancienne divinité apparemment bienveillante qui remonte peut-être, comme l’édification des pierres dressées, au-delà des Celtes comme le dit G. E. Pillard dans Le vrai Gargantua. Mythologie d’un géant. Déjà George Sand relevait, dans Les Légendes Rustiques, : « je croirais que Gargantua est l’œuvre du peuple et que, comme tous les grands créateurs, Rabelais a pris son bien où il l’a trouvé. »
