Camp Rolland
Camp Rolland submitted by richardfrance : The wall runs for 200 m. with vestiges of internal constructions hidden in the box-scrub. At the western end it meets up with the path again - close to the cliff where the Alaric dolmen and cave are located. More at www.dolmen.wordpress.com (Vote or comment on this photo)
Hillfort in Aude which gets its name from the mediaeval hero, but the construction dates from the late Bronze/Early Iron age.

Le Roc Gris is visible for miles around - at 418 m. it's a ridge-crest on the shoulder of Mont Alaric [600 m.] The short way up is to follow the GR 77 out of Moux, past the house called Four a Chaux and after 200 m. turn up a path on the L. The going is steep for 30 minutes - the views are breathtaking too.

Camp Rolland
Camp Rolland submitted by richardfrance : The terrain is harsh and arid - the fort was not occupied for long periods, though remains of amphorae of Massalia [Marseille] have been found. It was built by a tribe known as 'les Elisyques’ - a tribe centred on the extensive Montlaurès oppidum or fortified hill-settle... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Camp Rolland
Camp Rolland submitted by richardfrance : Close to the summit of Le Roc Gris the path takes you past the eastern end of the wall where it meets the cliff-edge. The hillfort is a classic 'épéron barré' or defensive spur: impregnable drop on one or more sides with a curved wall and bastions. (Vote or comment on this photo)
