A 25m long and 9.2m wide boat-shaped house of the pre-talayotic period near Magaluf town, Mallorca.

Reprint from the three information boards installed on site:

«The Alemany naviform dwelling (c. 1650-850 BC).
This site comprises a Bronze-Age "naviform" (boat-shaped) dwelling. It is one of the largest to be found on the island, and is notable for the way in which it was constructed, as well as for the alterations carried out to the building during its occupation. Firstly, the steep slope of the land meant it was necessary to install two levelling platforms on which the building was erected. Secondly, a reinforcing wall was built inside the interior walls of the nucleus of the structure. A second phase of construction involved the modification of the façade, with the addition of an entrance corridor and an area next to the north-east wall that has not been documented in any other building of this kind. The dwelling was covered with plant matter and waterproofed using mud. When the inside of the dwelling was excavated in 1968, the remains of two fires were discovered containing bones, pottery and bronze tools. The materials found in the levelling platforms suggest that an earlier structure existed before the naviform dwelling, which dated to c. 1800-1650 BC.

Restoration of the Alemany navetiform dwelling.
The boat-shaped building navetiform Alemany was first excavated in 1968 by Catalina Ensenyat, followed by the Council of Mallorca in 1997 and 1998. In 2010, Calvià Town Council carried out reinforcement and restoration work on the site.
This activity focused on the reconditioning and repositioning of wall stones, some of which had desappeared from the area of the alcove and the levelling platform, in order to prevent any further detereoration. Some isolated blocks of stone were also replaced in the side walls. Some of the stones are marked with tiles indicating that they are not original and have been replaced at some point.

Mallorca in the Bronze Age (1650-1000 BC).
During the Bronze Age, settlements were usually situated close to fertile areas, grouped together in clusters of "navetiform" dwellings, which get their name from their elongated, inverted boat shape. Collective burial grounds took the form of caves, some of which were artificially dug out of the rock. The settlements and burial grounds served to link the land to the community that inhabited it. Many navetiform dwellings such as this one have links to the sea and certain strategic landing points which would have favoured the connection between the island communities and those further afield, making it possible to exchange people, ideas and goods».

Naveta Alemany
Naveta Alemany submitted by sem : The ''navetiform' is at the junction of the Magaluf to Portals Vells road and the road to Cala Vinyes. It is quite easy to spot when you've driven past it three times! (Vote or comment on this photo)

Naveta Alemany submitted by sem : The navetas are thought to be dwellings and are like an upturned boat hull. This picture was taken from the door end. (Vote or comment on this photo)
