(Site description submitted by DrewParsons , December 2009)
The museum is a few metres from the station exit at Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Care the RER ligne A splits into two sections along the way - you need ligne A1.
The museum contains fabulous artifacts from prehistoric times and when I visited it in late September 2009 I had the museum to myself in contrast to the hordes of people at the Louvre.
The most famous item amongst the exhibits is the mammoth ivory carving called "La dame à la capuche" from the grotte du Pape, Brassempouy, Landes. It is dated to between 29000 and 22000 years of age. Other art works include animal carvings, bone spears, bâtons de commandement, treasures from Bronze Age burial mounds and many other prehistoric finds from across France.
